What is recyclable? What isn’t?

B Green Services accepts a wide range of materials in its single stream service. Many materials that are not currently accepted by B Green Services can still be recycled through specialized programs. Here is an overview of the main materials that B Green Services accepts and a few alternatives for those materials not accepted.

Paper

  • Office paper
  • Newspaper, laminated or unlaminated flyers
  • Junk mail, tissue paper, wrapping paper, etc.

Conditions: Keep dry, separate from other materials if in large quantities

Cardboard

  • Corrugated cardboard (OCC) and non-corrugated cardboard (also referred to as paperboard)

Conditions: Break down boxes, separate from other materials, keep dry

Plastics

  • #1 – PET (plastic bottles, microwave meal trays, etc.)
  • #2 – HDPE (plastic bottles, milk jugs, cereal bags, etc.)
  • #3 – PVC (film that packages meat, shrink wrap, piping)
  • #4 – LDPE (grocery bags, sandwich bags)
  • #5 – PP (medicine bottles, ketchup bottles, many container caps)
  • NOT ACCEPTED: # 6 – polystyrene / styrofoam
  • #7 – other plastics (not listed in the groups above) or multi-layered plastics (composed of several of the above)

Conditions: Empty and rinse containers

Metal

  • Aluminum cans and aluminum foil
  • Tin

Conditions: Empty and rinse containers

Glass

  • Bottles (food-grade jars / bottles)
  • NOT ACCEPTED – light bulbs, drinking glasses, car windshields (contaminants used in the manufacturing process of these materials mean that they should be kept separate from other glass)

Conditions: Empty and rinse containers, separate from other materials

Recyclable materials that are not currently accepted by B Green Services:

Plastic #6 – polystyrene

  • Egg cartons, meat trays, plastic tableware
  • Foam peanuts and packaging

Suggested Alternatives:

  • Most local UPS shipping stores will accept clean packing peanuts and styrofoam packing blocks for reuse.

Electronics

  • Televisions, computers, cell phones
  • Batteries

Suggested Alternatives:

  • BestBuy’s recycling program: www.bestbuy.com
  • North Fulton Recycling Center: www.keepnorthfultonbeautiful.org
  • There are a number of electronics recycling events that take place around metro Atlanta, too, such as the third Saturday of every month at Grady High School in Midtown.

Other Glass Items

  • Light bulbs
  • Glasses, plates, etc. (contaminants used in the production mean these items should not be mixed with other easily-recyclable glass)

Suggested Alternatives:

  • Home Depot and IKEA will accept compact floourescent light bulbs for recycling.

Other Materials

Earth 911 has a comprehensive database dedicated to matching up recyclers with facilities that take the materials. It includes both drop-off facilities and mail-in programs for a wide range of products. www.earth911.com
